Urban mobility plays a crucial role in connecting residents to jobs, education, healthcare and social opportunities, shaping their everyday lives. Transport systems and services must be planned and delivered in an inclusive and equitable manner, to meet the diverse needs of all users, including women, children, the elderly and those with limited mobility.

Why Gender-Responsive Mobility?
Urban transport systems today largely are predominantly designed to facilitate workplace commutes for formal workers, often overlooking the diverse mobility needs of home-based or informal workers, caregivers, low-income households, and others. Women are disproportionately represented among these underserved groups, with research highlighting unique characteristics of their mobility patterns.
Trip chaining
The need to combine multiple short care-related trips often leads to longer travel times and increased costs.
Safety Risks
Persistent threats of harassment in public spaces and while using transit systems.
Limited Accessibility
Time poverty caused by unreliable transportation services and limited access to diverse mobility options.
Infrastructure Barriers
Inadequate inclusive facilities like public toilets and the financial burden of choosing safer, yet costlier, travel options.
MobiliseHER aims to make cities inclusive by addressing these everyday challenges and creating solutions that prioritise the needs of all commuters. This includes:
Developing frameworks for gender-sensitive transport policies and plans.
We aim to develop comprehensive solutions that address systemic challenges in urban transport. Inclusive mobility fosters economic activity, strengthens communities, and creates thriving cities. Our focus cities—Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, and Kochi—will serve as models for refining gender-responsive and inclusive urban mobility practices.

Co-Creation and Consultation Workshop with CSOs
The workshop was organised by the Centre for Heritage, Environment and Development (c-hed) along with Urban Electric Mobility Initiative (UEMI) in collaboration with Participatory Research in Asia (PRIA), the workshop brought together Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and government officials, to co-create inclusive and gender-responsive mobility solutions for Kochi.
